<h2>Photo Eye Sensors</h2> <p>Since 1993, all garage door openers sold in the United States have been required to include photo eye sensors. These sensors mount near the floor on each side of the door opening and project an invisible beam across the doorway.</p> <p>If anything breaks this beam while the door is closing, the door automatically reverses. This prevents the door from closing on children, pets, or objects in its path. The sensors are particularly important because a closing door is heavy enough to cause serious injury.</p> <p>To test your photo eyes, start closing the door with the wall button, then wave an object (like a broom) through the beam. The door should immediately stop and reverse. If it doesn't, the sensors may be misaligned, dirty, or malfunctioning and should be serviced.</p> <p>Keep sensor lenses clean by wiping them with a soft cloth periodically. <h2>Auto-Reverse Mechanism</h2> <p>In addition to photo eyes, garage door openers have a mechanical auto-reverse function. If the door contacts an obstruction while closing, it should automatically reverse direction and open fully. This provides a backup layer of protection if the photo eyes fail or miss an obstruction.</p> <p>Test the auto-reverse by placing a 2x4 board flat on the floor in the door's path. When the door contacts the board, it should reverse within two seconds. If the door stops on the board without reversing, or pushes through it, the sensitivity needs adjustment.</p> <p>This feature can be adjusted on most openers using the force or sensitivity controls. However, be careful not to reduce sensitivity too much, or the door may reverse from normal resistance like tight weatherstripping.</p>
<h2>Manual Release Handle</h2> <p>Every garage door opener includes a manual release mechanism, typically a red cord and handle hanging from the trolley. Pulling this handle disconnects the door from the opener, allowing you to operate the door manually during power outages or opener malfunctions.</p> <p>Know where your manual release is and how to use it. In an emergency.such as needing to exit during a power outage or if the opener fails with your car inside.you'll need to pull this release and lift the door by hand.</p> <p>After using the manual release, you'll need to reconnect the door to the opener. This is usually done by pulling the release handle toward the door and then cycling the opener once. The trolley will re-engage automatically.</p>
<h2>Battery Backup</h2> <p>Many newer garage door openers include battery backup systems that allow the door to operate during power outages. This is especially valuable during storm-related outages when you may need to evacuate or when emergency responders need access.</p> <p>If your opener has battery backup, test it annually by operating the door while the opener is unplugged. Replace the battery according to the manufacturer's recommendations, typically every 2-5 years depending on usage.</p>
<h2>Regular Maintenance Is Key</h2> <p>Safety features only work if they're maintained. During an inspection, technicians check all safety systems, adjust as needed, and identify potential problems before they become dangerous.</p> <p>If your garage door opener is more than 15-20 years old, it may lack modern safety features. Upgrading to a newer opener is one of the most important safety improvements you can make, providing better protection for your family and more reliable operation.</p>
